What is Sacred Glow Abhyanga?

Abhyanga is Ayurvedic self-massage with warm herbal oils created to strengthen the body, ground the mind, and nourish the nervous system. In fact, the Sanskrit word sneha translates to both “oil” and “love,” so snehana—“to oil oneself,” also means “to love oneself.” 

I enhance this ancient ritual to include an intentional meditation that bring us closer to forgiving ourselves and others. In it, we visualize releasing past hurts and walking down a new path with a warm and open heart. This unique addition allows room for a deeper healing and a release from chronic pain and sadness. This is beauty everlasting.

Scientific Validation of Abhyanga: Evidence-Based Benefits of Ayurvedic Self-Massage

While the benefits of Ayurvedic self-massage have been known for centuries, recent research is beginning to confirm what practitioners have experienced for thousands of years. A 2021 clinical trial conducted by Dr. Vrinda Devani, Tikka Kumar, and Dr. Edward De Vol compared the effects of daily self-massage with herbal oil (abhyanga) to professional massage and dry self-massage.

The study tracked 49 participants over 15 days, measuring stress levels, quality of sleep, and overall quality of life. Results showed:

  • 16.4% decrease in stress levels.
  • 27.9% decrease in sleep disturbances.
  • 13% improvement in overall quality of life.

Sacred Glow can be brought to your studio or retreat as a guided meditation and self-massage workshop.Participants are guided through the practice with oils and hydrosols, learning to ground the senses, restore stillness, and release emotional and physical tension. Each guest receives a small ritual kit to use during class and take home.
